Deborah and Joel Shlianare both physicians who practiced medicine for over ten years before returning to UCLA for MBAs. They have since balanced medical management consulting with writing. They often write together, producing several medical mysteries as well as non-fiction books and numerous magazine and journal articles on healthcare and medical management issues. They recently moved from Los Angeles to Boca Raton, Florida. The Drs. Shlian are an unusual couple. Together they combine their clinical experiences with their other accomplishments. They have traveled to over 50 countries and have witnessed healthcare first-hand throughout the world. They have practiced medicine in the Army (Deborah was one of only a few women physicians in the Reserves during Vietnam) as well as at a major HMO and at a world class academic medical center.
When they saw the altruistic foundation on which “managed care” was originally conceived being eroded, they returned to school to study business. They graduated from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management and began a healthcare consulting firm. Seven years later, Shlian & Associates is a thriving national business.
